The story
Bariga sits on the Lagos Mainland between Somolu, Akoka and the University of Lagos — one of the most densely populated corners of the state, and one of the most football-mad. Every evening the tarred streets, school yards and the pitch at the Bariga Sports Centre fill with games. Bariga FC was set up in 2019, under the Bariga Local Council Development Area (B-LCDA) sports programme, to turn that raw street football into something organised.
The idea was simple: one council, one club. Instead of talent scattering to academies across Lagos, the best young players from the council area — Pedro, Ladi-Lak, Fola Agoro, Akoka, Bariga itself — would have a competitive team to represent, with proper coaching, kit and fixtures.
What we stand for
The club takes its motto straight from the Bariga council seal. It shapes how we recruit, how we play and how we treat the neighbourhood.
Every player in the senior squad has come through football played inside the council area. We recruit from our own streets before we look anywhere else.
Under-13 to under-17 to the first team — a single style of play and a clear route, so a talented ten-year-old in Bariga can see exactly where the shirt leads.
Free coaching clinics, boots and meals for children across the council, and school partnerships that keep boys and girls in class as well as on the pitch.
Timeline
Bariga FC founded under the B-LCDA sports programme. First squad drawn from the council’s inter-street competition.
Club adopts the green-and-gold crest and moves its home games permanently to the Bariga Sports Centre on Bawala Street.
Youth pathway formalised — under-13, under-15 and under-17 sides all playing one system.
Nurudeen Aweroro appointed head coach. A run to the knockout rounds of the Lagos grassroots circuit.
Champions — Bariga FC win the maiden 1XBET Community Football Cup, beating 40 teams across five conferences, and become the club to beat in Lagos grassroots football.
Title defence under way in the 1XCUP, plus a home campaign in the Senator Anthony Adefuye Grassroots Championship at the Bariga Sports Centre.
The ground
Our home is the Bariga Sports Centre on Bawala Street, a short walk from the council secretariat. On a matchday the Green Wall — the club’s supporters’ band and cheerleaders — packs the touchline and turns a community pitch into a proper football atmosphere.
